I was wandering around Wikipedia today when I came across this article on the Dunning-Kruger effect. According to the article, this effect is "the phenomenon wherein people who have little knowledge tend to think that they know more than they do, while others who have much more knowledge tend to think that they know less."
The article goes on to say, that Dunning and Kruger "hypothesized that with a typical skill which humans may possess in greater or lesser degree,
Incompetent individuals tend to overestimate their own level of skill.
Incompetent individuals fail to recognize genuine skill in others.
Incompetent individuals fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy.
If they can be trained to substantially improve their own skill level, these individuals can recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill."
They tested their theories on a bunch of Cornell undergraduate students which verified their hypothesis. I wonder if the students knew what they were getting into?
Finally, the world makes sense. It feels so good to know that it has a name.
